Baseball Visits Sacred Heart
ALBANY, N.Y. – Winners of five straight after sweeping Binghamton in a rain-shortened series over the weekend, the University at Albany baseball team will play its final non-conference game of the 2019 regular season with a trip to Sacred Heart on Tuesday.
UAlbany (24-21, 11-9 AE) swept a doubleheader at Binghamton over the weekend, tagging the Bearcats’ America East-leading pitcher for four runs in the second game while holding their conference-leading hitter to 0-6 with a walk in two games. The Great Danes inflicted their damage over just one inning in each game, winning 3-1 and 4-0 to extend their winning streak to five.
Sacred Heart last wrapped a three-game series at Mount St. Mary’s, taking two of three from the Mountaineers, including a 9-4 victory on the Mountaineers Senior Day on Sunday. The two victories snapped a four-game, one-tie skid for the Pioneers, and were the team’s first victories in the month of May.
Last season, the Great Danes hosted the Pioneers for one midweek game in May. After UAlbany took a 9-1 lead following the bottom of the second, Mount St. Mary’s scored each of the next 12 runs, including nine in the top of the seventh to take a 13-9 lead. UAlbany scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the bottom of the eighth, the first and only home run of senior Eric Mueller’s career, to clinch a 14-13 victory.
With the short sweep over Binghamton, UAlbany has climbed to third in the America East standings, mere percentage points behind the Bearcats for second place and a first-round bye in the America East Tournament. The tournament field has been set with UMBC falling out of contention over the weekend. Stony Brook remains atop the standings, but all six teams are spread within four games in the loss column of one another heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Following the game against Sacred Heart, the Great Danes will close out the 2019 regular season against Hartford starting on Friday, May 17. Saturday’s game will feature UAlbany’s Senior Day ceremony.
