Baseball Opens America East play with Hartford

UAlbany Sports Information   03-15-2019

ALBANY, N.Y. — The University at Albany baseball team will travel to West Hartford, Conn. to play Hartford in a three-game series beginning Saturday, March 16, with a doubleheader and concluding on Sunday. It marks the start of America East play for the Great Danes.

The team hopes to follow-up Head Coach Jon Mueller’s 400th victory this past weekend against Longwood with a win.

“Any of these milestones are a team effort,” said Mueller said of his 400th victory. “Obviously, you're always excited about those things, but this is something you look back on when you’re not coaching.”

Although the team dropped their doubleheader against Longwood, they were able to bounce back in the third game 13-2 off of clutch performances from Josh Loeffler and Marc Wangenstein. The win helped UAlbany improve to 3-6 for the season.

Hartford has started its season with eight of its first nine games on the road and an 0-9 record. Hartford last played Wednesday, March 13, against Northeastern and matched a season high of eight runs before falling 9-8.

The Hawks, the 2018 America East champions, were picked to finish first in the league's preseason poll.

“Hartford is a major challenge; they’re picked first (in preseason polls), and they’re coming off of an NCAA appearance," Mueller said. "They’re well-coached and have a very talented core coming back, highlighted by the Pitcher of the Year. So every single weekend is going to be a challenge. We can only do the three things that we can control: having good pitching performances, playing sound, fundamental defense, and quality at-bats.”
