Baseball Signs Nine Newcomers for 2020

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University at Albany baseball team will welcome nine newcomers for the 2020 season. The future Great Danes signed their National Letter of Intent (NLI), to officially join the UAlbany family beginning in the fall of 2019, announced by Head Coach Jon Mueller this week.

The men in purple are happy to welcome Matt Soloman, Ben Beauchamp, Joshua Salandy, Kyle Menaker, Joseph Gisonda, Anthony Fusco, Cregg Scherrer, Chris Fisher and Ryan Lanaro to the field next season.

Matt Soloman- SS, 5’9” 175 North Haven High School North Haven, CT

  • Four year varsity player
  • Senior Captain
  • Played in the Connecticut Junior All Star Game recognizing the best high school juniors in the state on Connecticut
  • Four year high honor roll
  • Former summer teammate of current Great Dane Jack DePaolo-Boisvert

Mueller on Soloman: "Matt is a tremendous student, and is regarded as one of the premier shortstops in the northeast. He defends at a high level and has and advanced approach at the plate."

Ben Beauchamp- OF, 5’10” 170 McQuaid Jesuit High School Rochester, NY

  • Three year varsity starter in baseball and football
  • First team All- Greater Rochester (Baseball)
  • Third team All State in 2018

Mueller on Beauchamp: "Ben is a strong student academically and a multi-sport athlete.  He is a high end athlete and can play multiple positions defensively.  We expect him to contribute immediately."

Josh Salandy- OF, 5’7” 175 Belen Jesuit High School Miami, FL

  • Four year varsity player
  • Varsity Coaches Award Recipient- Recognizing hardest working student athlete throughout the year
  • Member of the Science National Honor Society

Mueller on Salandy: "Josh is another high end student.  His work ethic matches his tremendous athletic ability.  He is a very explosive offensive weapon."

Kyle Menaker- RHP, 6’4” 190 Enfield High School Enfield, CT

  • All Conference Selection in both Baseball and Basketball
  • Played in the Connecticut Junior All Star Game recognizing the best high school juniors in the state on Connecticut
  • Summer teammate of Chris Fisher

Mueller on Menaker: "Kyle is another multi-sport athlete.  His size and length project very well.  We think Kyle has an extremely high ceiling."

Joe Gisonda- UTL, 5’9” 175 North Valley Stream High School Franklin Square, NY

  • Three sport athlete- Football, Wrestling, Baseball
  • In 2018 broke the school record at North Valley Stream for hits and runs- tied the homerun record with 7
  • Named All County, All State and a Diamond Award Finalist recognizing the top player on Long Island
  • Team Captain

Mueller on Gisonda: "Joe is a gifted student as well.  His athletic ability crosses 3 sports.  He grades off the charts with regards to his explosiveness and speed.  Recognized as one of the top athletes on Long Island in 2018."

Anthony Fusco- LHP, 6’4” 240 Yorktown High School Yorktown Heights, NY

  • Played Varsity Baseball as a freshman
  • All League Selection as a junior
  • Academic Honor Roll

Mueller on Fusco: "Anthony is a big projectable left handed pitcher.  Has pitched at a high level throughout his young baseball career."

Cregg Scherrer- LHP, 6’ 170 Skaneateles High School Skaneateles, NY

  • Two Sport Athlete- Football and Baseball
  • 2 Time All CNY Selection, 2 Time League Pitcher of the Year
  • League MVP in 2018
  • Under Armour Pre Season All American
  • Rated the top LHP in New York State by Prep Baseball Report

Mueller on Scherrer: "Cregg is one of the top left handed pitchers in New York State.  He has experienced a ton of success on the football field and baseball diamond.  He will contribute immediately."

Chris Fisher- C, 5’11” 155 Glastonbury High School Glastonbury, CT

  • Member of Student Athlete Leadership Team recognizing top leaders in sport
  • Varsity Baseball as a freshman
  • Team Captain
  • All Conference Selection in 2018
  • Played in the Connecticut Junior All Star Game recognizing the best high school juniors in the state on Connecticut

Mueller on Fisher: "Chris is a tremendous student and has great leadership qualities.  Another tremendous athlete who will add an advanced approach from the left side."

Ryan Lanaro- RHP, 5’8” 160 Herkimer County College Schenectady, NY

  • Suburban Council Pitcher of the Year in 2017
  • First Team All-State in 2017
  • Team won Section 2 Class A Championship

Mueller on Lanaro: "Ryan experienced a tremendous amount of success in section 2 during his time at Mohonasen High School.  He has continued with his bulldog mentality over the past 2 years as well."
