Baseball Hosts Maine To Close Home Schedule

UAlbany Sports Information   05-10-2018

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team will return one last time to Varsity Field this weekend to host a three-game series against Maine to wrap up the 2018 home schedule. It is the second time the Great Danes and Black Bears will play this season.

UAlbany (18-22, 8-10 AE) last played mid-week games at home against Army, falling 11-4, and on the road at Niagara, falling 7-5. In both games, the games were close late until Army pulled away in the sixth and Niagara pulled away in the eighth. Last weekend, UAlbany hosted UMass Lowell, falling in two of three games to the Riverhawks.

Maine last hosted Binghamton, taking two of three from the Bearcats. The weekend before, Maine was swept in three games at UMBC. In between, the Black Bears lit up Massachusetts to the tune of a 24-5 final score, the team’s highest-scoring outing of the season.

UAlbany and Maine are currently tied for fifth in the America East standings, with UAlbany holding a better overall record but with Maine holding the head-to-head advantage after sweeping three games against the Great Danes earlier this season. Binghamton, the unanimous preseason conference favorite, is currently in seventh place and out of the tournament standings, but has the same amount of America East victories, eight, as UAlbany and Maine. Since the Bearcats have only three conference games remaining, if UAlbany ends the weekend with a higher in-conference win total, the Bearcats will be eliminated from tournament contention and the tournament field would be set, as only one team will not qualify this season.

This weekend will see UAlbany host its annual Vs. Cancer game, rescheduled from last weekend, as well as honor its senior class, J.T. Genovese, Jack McClure, and Connor Powers, on its Senior Day.

Following the series against Maine, UAlbany will play its final four regular season games on the road, culminating in a three-game series at defending America East champion UMBC. The America East Tournament begins Wednesday, May 23 and will be hosted by Maine.
