WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team (11-18, 3-9 AE) was back on the road Wednesday after a short homecoming last weekend, visiting Army (18-21) for a single game.  After opening up an eight run lead, the Black Knights held off the Great Danes’ furious rally to win the game 13-10.

UAlbany took an early lead, striking quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Kevin Donati led off the game for the Danes with a single to the left side.  After Connor Powers struck out, Evan Harasta reached safely on an error by Army’s shortstop.  The next batter, Marc Wangenstein, hit a single through the left side that scored Donati from second base.  Next, Travis Collins flied out to center, before Alex Thul hit a single to right that scored Harasta from second.

Army responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.  The Black Knight exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the second to take a 10-2 lead.  After Army added another run in the bottom of the third, UAlbany scored once in the top of the fourth to bring the game to 11-3.  Thul worked a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.  Matt Codispoti hit a single through the left side, allowing Thul to advance to third.  Patrick Lagravinese grounded out to second as Thul crossed the plate for UAlbany’s third run of the game.

UAlbany added three runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Harasta and Wangenstein reached base on a walk and a single, respectively, before Collins loaded the bases with a one-out single through the right side.  After Thul struck out, Codispoti hit two-RBI single that scored Harasta and Wangenstein.  The next batter, Lagravinese, hit a double to right that scored Collins from second, bringing the game to 11-6.

Army scored once in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 12-6.  The sixth inning passed without a score, and in the top of the seventh, UAlbany closed to within three runs behind a two-out, three-run home run from Donati.

Great Danes scored once again in the top of the eighth, a solo home run from Wangenstein, to cut the lead to 12-10.  Army responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning to bring the lead back to three.

Down three in the top of the ninth, Stephen Loreng hit a single up the middle to lead off the inning.  Donati then drew a walk in the next at-bat, bringing the tying run to the plate.  Powers, the next batter, struck out, and then Harasta hit into a double play to end the game.  Army held on to win by a score of 13-10.

Wangenstein led UAlbany with three hits, and Donati led with three RBIs.  Donati and Codispoti also had multihit games, and Wangenstein, Codispoti, and Lagravinese each had two RBIs.  UAlbany starter, Joe Romero, lasted 1.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk.  He was relieved by David Hutchison, who allowed six runs before recording the final out of the second inning.  For the remainder of the game, Charlie Peltz, Angelo Spedafino, Hunter Torres, Ray Weber, Marcus Failing, and Derek Balbierz combined for 6.0 innings, four hits, three runs, four strikeouts, and five walks.

UAlbany scored 10 runs on 11 hits while committing three errors.  Army scored 13 runs on 14 hits with one error.

“We dug ourselves a big hole early,” said head coach Jon Mueller.  “I was proud of the way our guys battled back and we had the tying run at the plate in the ninth.  We will turn our attention to Marist this weekend.”

UAlbany will visit Marist for a doubleheader on Saturday, before hosting the Red Foxes on Sunday.
