Men's Soccer Heads To Rhode Island For Weekend Slate

UAlbany Sports Information   09-06-2018

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team begins a stretch of their schedule this weekend during which they will play nine of their next 11 games on the road, after opening the season playing three of four at home. First up is a trip through Rhode Island to visit Providence and Brown. UAlbany will play both opponents for the first time in program history.

UAlbany (2-2-0) suffered its first home loss since last October when the team hosted St. Bonaventure on Monday night. A scoreless first half, UAlbany’s third straight, bled into the second half until the Bonnies broke through in the 85th minute when it looked like UAlbany was about to play its third-straight overtime game. Despite control pace and tempo for much of the game, the Great Danes were unable to find the back of the net, despite applying high pressure early and late in the second half. The loss was just the Danes’ fifth at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium since the start of the 2015 season.

Providence will host UAlbany Friday in the team’s second home game of the season, having played its three of its first four games away from home, including two neutral-site games in Dallas against SMU and Illinois-Chicago to start the season. The Friars last visited Harvard, falling to the Crimson 2-1.

Brown has played just once this season, defeating Bryant 2-1 at home to open their season. Before Sunday afternoon’s game, Brown will host George Washington as the second of three home games to open their season.

The loss to St. Bonaventure dropped UAlbany back to .500 on the season, and the Great Danes now sit in fifth place in the America East. UMass Lowell is the last unbeaten team in the conference, and just jumped into the United Soccer Coaches national poll at #22. New Hampshire and Vermont, both 3-1, are each receiving votes in the poll, with the Wildcats dropping from their preseason position of #19 after losing their season opener to then #15 Virginia. UMBC is also 3-1 and ahead of UAlbany in the conference standings.

Following the weekend trip through Rhode Island, the Great Danes will play a third-straight game on the road on Saturday, September 15 at Quinnipiac, before returning home on Friday, September 21 to open America East play against Stony Brook.
