ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team returns to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium Friday to host Harvard in the second leg of a doubleheader with the women’s team, which hosts Iona at 4:00 p.m.
The Great Danes (1-1-0) won their home opener last week, defeating visiting Marist 4-3 after falling behind 2-0 in the first 11 minutes. The victory was UAlbany’s first in a season opener since 2010.
Most recently, the Danes visited two-time defending Patriot League champion and 2017 NCAA Round of 16 participant Colgate in the Raiders’ home opener. After a scoreless first half, graduate transfer from Virginia Tech and local product Gino Rossi scored his first goal as a Great Dane to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Colgate was able to force overtime with a goal in the 89th minute, and then claimed victory in the first overtime period in the 99th.
Including Colgate, UAlbany has gone into overtime against five of its last nine opponents dating back to the 2017 regular season, including three such games in the 2017 postseason: the America East quarterfinals against UMBC, the America East title game against UMass Lowell, and the NCAA First Round against Maryland. In those five games, UAlbany went 1-1-3, advancing past UMBC and Maryland on penalty kicks.
Harvard will be playing its season opener on Friday with the trip to Casey Stadium. The Great Danes met the Crimson for the first time in history a season ago in Cambridge, with UAlbany taking a 3-1 victory.
Following the game against Harvard, UAlbany will host a second consecutive home game, on Monday, September 3 against St. Bonaventure, before playing nine of the next 11 on the road.
