BOSTON – University at Albany senior forward Nico Solabarrieta was named America East Offensive Player of the Week, the conference offices announced Monday. He was named alongside Defensive Player Zach Rowell from UMass Lowell and Rookie Jackson Becher from UMBC.
Solabarrieta, a native of Santiago, Chile, scored twice in the Great Danes’ season opener last Friday against Marist. UAlbany let up two goals to the Red Foxes in the first 11 minutes of the game, but battled back to tie things up at two heading into halftime. Solabarrieta scored quickly after the break, in the 50th minute after a set-up from teammate Daniel Krutzen, to give UAlbany their first lead of the night.
Shortly after his first goal, Solabarrieta scored once again after newcomer Kaio DaSilva drew a penalty kick after a collision with Marist’s goalkeeper. Solabarrieta successfully converted the attempt, his third in five games dating back to shootouts against UMBC in the 2017 America East quarterfinals and against Maryland in the 2017 NCAA Tournament First Round.
With his two goals on Friday, Solabarrieta moves within two points of Jarvin Skeete (1999-01) for second place in career scoring in Division I program history, and is now tied for third with Yan Gbolo (2003-06) in Division I career goals with 17. His next assist will break a three-way tie with Stephen Hall (03-06) and former teammate Afonso Pinheiro (2014-17) for the Division I program lead.
UAlbany opens their road schedule this afternoon against two-time defending Patriot League champion Colgate.
