ALBANY, N.Y. – Fresh off a comeback victory in their first season opener since 2010, the University at Albany men’s soccer team hits the road for the first time in 2018 to face off against Colgate University on Monday.
The Great Danes (1-0-0) let up two goals in the first 11 minutes in their season opener Friday against Marist, but battled back to tie the game by halftime, and quickly take the lead following the break. Newcomers Kaio DaSilva and Hugo Guerra combined for the Danes’ first goal of the season, while 2017 leading scorer Nico Solabarrieta scored twice in the second half to give the Great Danes the 4-3 victory in a season opener for the first time since defeating Fairfield to start the 2010 season.
Colgate (1-0-0) opened on the road at Pittsburgh, defeating the Panthers 1-0. The Raiders have won each of the last two Patriot League titles, and advanced to the Round of 16 in last year’s NCAA Tournament, defeating Massachusetts and Michigan before falling to four-seed Louisville.
UAlbany is currently tied atop the America East standings through the season’s first game with preseason favorite UMass Lowell (1-0 over UMass), UMBC (1-0 over Temple), and Vermont (2-0 over Elon). New Hampshire, which was picked second in the preseason poll after advancing to the Round of 16 last season, fell in its opening match to Virginia, 1-0.
Following the game against Colgate, UAlbany will return to Casey Stadium for two consecutive home games next weekend against Harvard and St. Bonaventure, before playing nine of their next 11 on the road.
