Men's Soccer Hosts Marist to Open 2018 Season
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team will open the 2018 season hosting the Marist Red Foxes Friday night at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. It is the third straight year UAlbany has played Marist in their season opener.
UAlbany is the reigning America East champion, winning their second consecutive title after knocking off UMass Lowell on the road in double-overtime in last year’s title match. Also for the second straight season, UAlbany advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after advancing past Maryland in the eighth round of penalty kicks.
This year, the Great Danes were picked third in the America East Preseason Coaches’ Poll, behind favorite UMass Lowell and 2017 Round of 16 participant New Hampshire. The Wildcats hold preseason national rankings of 18 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and 25 in the collegesoccernews.com poll. UAlbany is receiving votes in both polls.
The 2018 squad returns a strong core of talent, despite needing to replace five starters from last year’s team. Daniel Krutzen headlines the group, having been named a Third Team All-American in 2017. Krutzen has further garnered preseason awards this year, including being named to collegesoccernews.com’s Preseason All-America Third Team, topdrawersoccer.com’s Second Team Best-XI, and is ranked 16th on topdrawersoccer’s Preseason Top 100 list. Finally, Krutzen was also named to the 2018 Preseason MAC Hermann Award Watch List.
Goalkeeper Danny Vitiello returns this year after leading the America East in shutouts, goals against average, and save percentage last season. Nico Solabarrieta, leading scorer on last year’s team, headlines a scoring attack that brings back nearly 70% of the points scored in 2017. Finally, Carlos Clark joins Krutzen on topdrawersoccer.com’s Preseason Top 100, ranking 85th.
Marist scored 31 goals in 18 games en route to seven victories last season. They were led by then-freshman Allen Gavilanes, who scored eight goals and recorded nine assists in his first-year campaign. For his efforts Gavilanes has been named to the MAC Hermann Watch List this season.
The Red Foxes’ 2018 roster includes the last two MAAC Players of the Year in Gavilanes and Cameron Harr, who scored 17 goals as a sophomore in 2016, and returns to Marist after a junior-year stint at the University of Virginia.
