Recap

The University at Albany men’s soccer team will play in the America East championship game for the second consecutive year after defeating top overall seed Vermont 1-0 in Burlington Wednesday night.  It was the Great Danes’ fifth consecutive shutout victory over the Catamounts dating back to the 2015 season.  It was also the second consecutive victory for the Great Danes over the Catamounts in the America East semifinal round.

For UAlbany, the victory was the team's 13th of the season, matching the Division I program best set last year.  The previous high was 12, set first in 2004 and then matched in 2008, before the 2016 team won 13.

Junior forward Nico Solabarrieta scored the game’s only goal in the 32nd minute after receiving a low through ball from midfield sent by Daniel Krutzen.  Solabarrieta placed his shot past the America East Goalkeeper of the Year, Aron Runarsson, to give UAlbany the 1-0 lead that would prove to be the final score.

Vermont outshot UAlbany 6-2 in the first half, and 11-6 for the full game, but was unable to find the back of the net despite the shot disparity.  Only five of Vermont’s shots, and just two of UAlbany’s, were on target for the game.

UAlbany goalkeeper Danny Vitiello made five saves during the game and earned his eighth shutout of the season.

Next: The Great Danes will face two-seed UMass Lowell in the America East championship game in Lowell, Mass. on Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m.  The Great Danes defeated the Riverhawks 1-0 earlier this season at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
