UAlbany Sports Information   11-07-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team finds itself staring down an America East tournament semifinal match for the third consecutive season. The Great Danes (12-4-2, 4-2-1 AE) will visit top overall seed Vermont for the right to play in the tournament final.

In the regular season, the game between the Great Danes and the Catamounts was played in Vermont. The teams will play a second time in Burlington Wednesday evening. In their first meeting, UAlbany defeated Vermont 1-0. It was the fourth consecutive victory in the series for the Great Danes, who have outscored the Catamounts 10-0 during that stretch.

One of those four victories was last year’s America East semifinal. Playing at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, second-seed UAlbany hosted the third-seed Vermont having previously defeated the Catamounts 4-0 at Casey Stadium during the regular season. Vermont had advanced to the semifinal by defeating six-seed Binghamton 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals. UAlbany managed to shut out Vermont once again, taking the semifinal meeting by a score of 2-0.

UAlbany clinched its berth into the semifinals after redeeming a regular season loss to UMBC. Playing at home for the second matchup, the Great Danes took an early 1-0 lead after Daniel Krutzen scored in the 18th minute. UAlbany held its lead until the 83rd minute when UMBC’s Sammy Kahsai found the back of the net to tie the game at one and ultimately force overtime. Neither team managed to score in either overtime period, setting up a penalty shootout to determine the winner. After four rounds, UAlbany held a 3-2 advantage, with the potential clinching goal on Afonso Pinheiro’s foot. Pinheiro successfully converted his attempt, putting the Great Danes into the semifinals 4-2 on PKs.

Vermont went unbeaten in its final five America East games, accumulating a 4-0-1 record in that stretch to claim the outright regular season title. The Great Danes were the only America East opponent to defeat the Catamounts during the regular season.
