Men's Soccer Hosts Championship Rematch vs. Hartford
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team returns to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium for its final two home games of the 2017 regular season starting on Friday in a rematch of the 2016 America East title game against Hartford.
The Great Danes (9-4-0, 2-2-0 AE) clinched their first-ever America East title in 2016, defeating Hartford 1-0 in the 89th minute on a successful penalty kick attempt from Afonso Pinheiro. For the game, UAlbany outshot Hartford 19-2.
The Hawks entered the 2016 America East tournament as the five-seed, and defeated New Hampshire and top-seed Stony Brook on the road to earn its spot in the final. As the two-seed, UAlbany earned a first-round bye, and then shutout three-seed Vermont in the semifinal.
The Great Danes and Hawks opened the America East scheduled against one another in 2016 in West Hartford, Conn., playing to a 0-0, double-overtime tie.
UAlbany has lost its last two games, to then-#23 New Hampshire 2-1, and at UMBC 3-1. Against UMBC, UAlbany allowed only its second first-half goal of the season, and trailed by more than one goal for the first time all season.
Hartford has lost three of its last five, but most recently played Stony Brook to a 1-1 draw on the road. The Hawks’ last win was a 2-1 affair over Northeastern on October 3.
UAlbany currently ranks fourth in the America East standings behind New Hampshire, Vermont, and UMBC, while holding a head-to-head victory over the Catamounts. They have the same conference record as UMass Lowell, against whom the Danes also have a head-to-head victory.
After Hartford, the Great Danes will play the final home game of the 2017 regular season on Tuesday, October 24 against Hartwick.
