Men's Soccer Visits UMBC

UAlbany Sports Information   10-13-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team will play its third game of its last four on the road Saturday when the team visits UMBC. It is the team’s third of four straight America East games.

On Wednesday, the Great Danes (9-3-0, 2-1-0 AE) hosted #23 New Hampshire, the first ranked opponent that UAlbany has faced this season. The Wildcats, like UMass Lowell before the Riverhawks lost three-straight, including one at UAlbany, had ranked as highly as #12 this season in the United Soccer Coaches national poll. After a scoreless first half, junior forward Nico Solabarrieta forced a turnover deep in Wildcat territory and scored a goal to break the 0-0 tie. New Hampshire responded with two late goals in a seven minute span to take the game 2-1. The loss snapped the Great Danes’ six-game winning streak, and nine-game home winning streak.

In the nine consecutive games at home that UAlbany won, dating back to the 2016 regular season finale against Binghamton, the Danes outscored opponents 25-2 with six shutouts.

UMBC last played at UMass Lowell, falling by a score of 3-2. The Retrievers have spent their last two games on the road after playing the previous four at home. Saturday is scheduled to be UMBC’s Homecoming game.

The trip to Baltimore is UAlbany’s penultimate road trip of the 2017 regular season. The Danes will return home for the final two home games against Hartford and Hartwick, before closing the regular season at Stony Brook and at Binghamton.

UAlbany is currently second in the America East standings behind New Hampshire. In addition to the Great Danes and the Wildcats, UMass Lowell and Vermont each boast 2-1 conference records atop the standings.
