Short Story: The University at Albany men’s soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime against preseason America East favorite UMass Lowell and fended off a second half surge from the Riverhawks to notch a win in the conference opener.

Coach Gorman: “I thought it was a typical America East game.  You have two good teams with really good players on the field each wanting to win the match, get the three points, get off to a good start in conference play.  I think Lowell are one of the top teams not only in the conference but in the country with the players they have and what they do.  We were excited to play against them tonight.  It’s always fun to get started with conference play, and we’re obviously thrilled with three points.”

Recap

The University at Albany men’s soccer team returned home Saturday night to host UMass Lowell in the first America East game of the regular season.  The Riverhawks, who were the 2016 regular season conference champions, were selected as the favorite in the conference in the preseason coaches’ poll.  Saturday night, the Great Danes defeated the Riverhawks 1-0.

The Great Danes broke through in the 36th minute after a fairly even back-and-forth in the first half.  Moosah Khanat played a long ball from the right side just over the UMass Lowell 18.  Nico Solabarrieta was waiting and made a diving header attempt at goal that was saved by UMass Lowell keeper Austin Kroll.  The rebound landed at Daniel Krutzen’s feet, who had been trailing behind Solabarrieta, around whom the Riverhawk defenders had crashed.  Krutzen calmly but decisively placed the ball in the back of the net to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead that would prove to be the final score.

UMass Lowell out-shot UAlbany in the first half 4-3, but trailed for the game 9-8.  The Riverhakws managed just four shots in the second half despite increasing their aggressiveness as time wore down.

UAlbany remains undefeated at home this season, and has increased its home winning streak to nine.  In those games, the Great Danes have outscored opponents 25-3, and have recorded six shutouts.

Next: UAlbany will play two straight road games starting Tuesday, October 3 at LIU Brooklyn, and then Saturday, October 7 at Vermont.  The Great Danes will return home on Wednesday, October 11 to host New Hampshire, who currently ranks 12th in the coaches’ poll.
