BOSTON – For the second consecutive week, the University at Albany has had a player named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Last week, forward Owen Fingar earned UAlbany’s first Rookie award of the season, and this week sophomore defender Adam Malekos earned the honor.
Malekos, an Ottawa, Canada native, scored two goals in two UAlbany wins last week, helping the team earn its first two road wins of the season. In the week’s first game at Lafayette, Makelos scored the game-winner in overtime, marking his first career goal as a Great Dane. Sunday night at Harvard, Malekos scored just before halftime to put UAlbany up 2-0.
Malekos is the third Great Dane to earn a weekly award, following Fingar last week in Week 4, and forward Afonso Pinheiro in Week 2. Malekos shares this week’s award with Player Harris Brkovic from Binghamton.
The Great Danes will return home on Saturday, September 30 to begin America East play. Their opponent will be preseason conference favorite and 2016 regular season champion UMass Lowell.
