OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - University at Albany men’s soccer forward Afonso Pinheiro has been named as a candidate for the 2017 Senior Class Award for men’s soccer. Pinheiro was one of 60 NCAA soccer student-athletes (30 men and 30 women) named on Friday.
To be eligible for the Senior CLASS Award, which stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, a student-athlete must compete as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the community, the classroom, in character, and in competition.
Pinheiro, a São Paulo, Brazil native, has scored 35 goals and 84 points in his career at UAlbany, ranking first all-time in Division I program history in each category. He was named America East Striker of the Year in 2015 as a sophomore, and as a junior scored the game-winning penalty kick in the America East championship game to give the Great Danes their first-ever Division I conference title. In the classroom, Pinheiro holds down a 3.29 GPA in Globalization Studies with a minor in Spanish, and will graduate with honors in December. His academic accomplishments earned him a spot on the 2016 NSCAA Scholar All-East First Team last season.
The pool of 30 men’s candidates will narrow to 10 finalists midway through the regular season to complete the official ballot. After a round of voting, the Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2017 College Cup in December.
