Men's Soccer Picked Second In Preseason Poll

UAlbany Sports Information   08-15-2017

BOSTON – The University at Albany men’s soccer program has been selected second in the preseason America East coaches' poll, the conference announced Tuesday.

The Great Danes are the reigning America East champions, winning their first such title last season.  The team clinched the second overall seed in the conference tournament and defeated Vermont and Hartford at home to win the first America East championship in program history.  UAlbany did not allow a goal over the duration of the tournament.

This year’s team will return eight starters, including 72% of the scoring production from the 2016 squad that scored 39 goals, tying a program high for a single season, and 119 points, which ranks second just behind the 2008 team that scored 124 points.  The team will, however, look to replace half of the back four from last season, which helped the team defense let up just 10 goals over the final 14 games of the season, including three consecutive postseason shutouts.

UAlbany received three of a possible seven first place votes in the poll, accumulating 45 total points.  UMass Lowell narrowly edged the Great Danes, earning 47 points and the remaining five first place votes.  Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.  The Riverhawks earned the 2016 regular season title but were ineligible to compete in the postseason due to NCAA reclassification restrictions.  This year, the Riverhawks have completed their reclassification and are eligible for postseason competition.

Stony Brook was voted third, with 32 points, followed closely by New Hampshire with 31 points.  2016 finalist Hartford, UMBC, Vermont, and Binghamton rounded out the eight-team poll.  Last season, UAlbany was selected as the conference favorite, after winning the 2015 regular season title.

In 2016, the America East ranked third among Division I conferences in RPI, trailing only the ACC and the Big Ten.  Additionally, the America East ranked behind only the ACC in non-conference winning percentage.  Finally, seven America East squads ranked in the top 77 in RPI, joining the ACC and the Big East as the only conferences to have so many teams rank so highly.

The Great Danes will open the season at Marist on Friday, August 25, and will host their first home game on Monday, August 28 against Rhode Island.
