Men's Soccer Lands Five All-Conference Selections

BOSTON – The University at Albany men’s soccer team has had five players selected to received All-Conference accolades for the 2018 regular season, the America East announced Friday. Nico Solabarrieta, Carlos Clark, Sam Philip, Hafliði Sigurðarson, and Daniel Krutzen were UAlbany’s selections this year.

Solabarrieta, a senior forward from Santiago, Chile, was named to the All-Conference First Team. Solabarrieta earns his second All-Conference selection, having been previously named to the All-Conference Second Team in 2017. Solabarrieta leads the America East with 25 points and shares the lead with 10 goals. Additioanlly, Solabarrieta was named to the All-Academic team for the first time in his career, having accumulated a 3.46 GPA studying Business with a minor in Portuguese.

Clark, a senior midfielder from Teaneck, N.J., was named to the All-Conference Second Team. It is Clark’s third-straight season earning an All-Conference Second Team selection. Clark, who is one of four players on the roster to start all 17 games, ranks second on the team with five goals and 13 points this season. He was also named to the All-Academic team for the second-straight season, accumulating a 3.71 GPA studying Business. 

Philip and Sigurðarson, freshmen from Christchurch, New Zealand and Reykjavík, Iceland, respectively, were named to the All-Rookie team. Philip has appeared in all 17 games and has made 10 starts for the Great Danes this season, recording two assists. Sigurðarson ranks tied for fifth on the team with six points, scoring two goals and recording two assists in 15 appearances, including 13 starts.

Krutzen, a defender from Lanaken, Belguim, joined Solabarrieta and Clark on the All-Academic team. Krutzen earns his second-straight All-Academic selection, earning a 3.82 GPA studying Business. Krutzen also leads the America East with nine assists, a total that is tied for eighth nationally.

Stony Brook took home three of the six major awards, including Midfielder of the Year (Martieon Watson), Rookie of the Year (Christian Miesch), and Coaching Staff of the Year. New Hampshire claimed Defender of the Year in Josh Bauer and Goalkeeper of the Year in Lars Huxsohl, while Vermont’s Geo Alves was named Striker of the Year. 

UAlbany will face off against their 2017 America East title game opponent UMass Lowell in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament on Saturday.
