Recap

Playing their second straight game in Providence, R.I., the University at Albany men’s soccer team claimed their first victory of the season on the road, defeating host Brown by a final score of 2-1.

UAlbany goalkeeper Danny Vitiello earned his program record-setting 26th career victory with the win Sunday, breaking a tie for most in program history with Trevor Serraro.  Vitiello is the second Great Dane this season to become a career program leader, following teammate Nico Solabarrieta, who set the career assists mark against Harvard last week.

“Danny has been one of the outstanding goalkeepers to come through this program,” said head coach Trevor Gorman.  “He’s a winner and his attitude and determination are contagious.  He’s been a tremendous ambassador of this program on and off the field.”

After being shut out by Providence on Friday, the Great Dane offense struck early against Brown, scoring in the 10th minute when freshman Hugo Guerra set up Daniel Krutzen for Krutzen’s first goal of the season.  It was the first game since the season opener against Marist in which UAlbany or its opponent scored a first-half goal.

UAlbany maintained the offensive pressure in the first half, taking eight shots over the first 45 minutes of gametime, doubling Brown’s shot total.  Shortly into the second half, the Great Danes scored again, when Solabarrieta and freshman Hafliði Sigurðarson combined to set up Carlos Clark to put UAlbany up 2-0.

Brown’s offense kept testing the UAlbany defense, taking 12 shots in the second half.  Vitiello, as a result, made five saves during the second half, after making two in the first.  The Bears’ broke through late, in the 86th minute when Malcom Johnson set up Daniel Schiller to cut the Danes’ lead in half.  The Bears would not come any closer, and UAlbany secured the victory with one more road game to play before returning to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in two weeks.

Next: UAlbany’s road trip continues next Saturday at Quinnipiac.
