Men's Soccer Visits Vermont
ALBANY, N.Y. – Following a one-game reprieve, the University at Albany men’s soccer team (8-2-0, 1-0-0 AE) will return to conference play to face Vermont on Saturday. The Great Danes played the Catamounts twice last season, including in the America East semifinals, and shut them out both times.
During last year’s regular season meeting, Vermont arrived at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium boasting on of the most potent scoring offenses in the country. UAlbany, who had just upset #3 Syracuse the game before, held Vermont to no goals, and defeated the Catamounts 4-0.
The teams would meet again at Casey Stadium in the America East semifinal round. The Great Danes, having earned the #2 seed in the tournament, enjoyed a first round bye, during which time #3 Vermont knocked off #6 Binghamton 2-1 in double overtime. The second trip to Albany for Vermont ended in the same result, with the Great Danes eliminating the Catamounts from the conference tournament 2-0.
Vermont would earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, hosting and defeating Rider in the first round 4-1. The Catamounts drew #12 Virginia in the second round, falling 2-1 in double overtime. Vermont is the first team that qualified for the 2016 NCAA Tournament that the Great Danes will play this season.
UAlbany last won its third consecutive road game, defeating LIU Brooklyn 2-1. The Great Danes let up their first first-half goal and trailed at the half for the first time this season. UAlbany picked up the intensity in the second half and scored twice to win.
Vermont last played at Massachusetts, falling to the Minutemen 2-1. It was Vermont’s sixth consecutive game on the road. This weekend, Vermont will be playing their first home game since defeating Yale 1-0 on September 9.
The Great Danes will return home on Wednesday, October 11 to host New Hampshire.
