Men's Soccer Opens America East Play vs. UMass Lowell
ALBANY, N.Y. – After going 6-2-0 in its first eight games of the season, the University at Albany men’s soccer team will finally face its first America East opponent on Saturday when UMass Lowell visits Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Riverhawks are the defending America East regular season champions and were selected as the favorite in the America East this year in the preseason coaches’ poll. They were ineligible for the postseason due to NCAA reclassifying rules, and were unable to play in either the America East or the NCAA tournament. This year is the first year the Riverhawks are postseason-eligible.
UAlbany is coming off its first extended road trip of the season, having played its last two games on the road after playing four of its first six at home. The Great Danes finally notched their first road win with a 1-0 overtime victory at Lafayette, and then won again at Harvard 3-1.
UMass Lowell has lost its last two games, at Dartmouth 1-0, and at Akron 5-0. Saturday will be the Riverhawks third consecutive road game.
The Great Danes are 4-0 at home this season, and have won their last eight games at Casey Stadium. In those games, UAlbany has outscored its opponents 24-3 and has recorded five shutouts.
Through the first eight games of the 2017 season, UAlbany stands in second place in the America East behind New Hampshire who is one of eight unbeaten teams in the country. The Great Danes lead the America East in points (58), goals (19), and assists (20), and rank second in goals allowed per game (0.88). Senior Afonso Pinheiro shares the conference lead with 14 points, and junior Daniel Krutzen leads the conference with six assists.
