BOSTON & CULVER CITY, Calif. - University at Albany senior Afonso Pinheiro has been named America East Player of the Week for the week ending September 3, the conference offices announced Tuesday. Additionally, Top Drawer Soccer named Pinheiro to their national team of the week for the same time period.
It is the third time in his career that Pinheiro has been named America East Player of the Week, having been named previously as a sophomore on November 2, 2015, and as a junior on October 10, 2016. He shares the award this week with Rookie of the Week Alex Popovich, the goalkeeper for the University of Vermont.
Pinheiro, a forward from São Paulo, Brazil, recorded seven points in two UAlbany wins last week, over Rhode Island and George Mason. In a 4-0 victory over the Rams, Pinheiro recorded an assist to set up the Great Danes’ first goal, and then later scored the team's fourth and final goal of the evening. Against the Patriots, Pinheiro scored twice in the span of 90 seconds late in the second half, including a penalty kick, clinching the Danes’ 3-1 win.
Through three games and the first two weeks of the 2017 season, Pinheiro leads a UAlbany offense that ranks sixth nationally in points per game and ninth in assists per game. Further, the Great Danes rank fifth in the country in scoring offense. Pinheiro himself ranks 20th nationally in goals this season, and 32nd in total points.
Pinheiro will return to action with his teammates tonight at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium when UAlbany hosts former America East rival Boston University.
