Short Story: The UAlbany women’s cross country team placed fifth at conference championships behind All-Conference performances from Hannah Reinhardt and Cara Sherman

How it happened

  • Hannah Reinhardt placed sixth overall in 17:44.7, earning First Team All-Conference accolades
  • Cara Sherman was Second Team All-Conference, placing 10th in 18:01.6
  • The women’s finishing gap was 72.3 seconds
  • New Hampshire won the team title behind individual champion Elinor Purrier and runner-up Shannon Murdock 


Two weeks after hosting the 51st Annual UAlbany XC Invitational, the University at Albany women’s cross country team kicked off the postseason with a return to Vermont for the America East XC Championships. Improving one spot from last year’s championships, the women placed fifth overall in the team standings with a total of 113 points.

Hannah Reinhardt placed UAlbany for the fourth consecutive meet, finishing sixth overall in 17:44.7, her second-fastest time of the season. Cara Sherman placed 10th overall in 18:01.6. Reinhardt earned All-Conference First-Team accolades and Sherman earned Second-Team.

Águeda Muñoz Marqués, who placed second overall at the Pre-Conference meet on this course in September to open the season, placed 28th overall in 18:38.4. Holly Machabee placed 31st in 18:42.0. The Danes’ final scorer was Colleen Maloney, who placed 39th in 18:57.0.

The two UAlbany tiebreakers were Nira Lovick, who placed 52nd in 19:31.0, and MacKenzie Pierie, who placed 59th in 19:54.9. Also competing for UAlbany was Tiguida Toure, placing 69th in 20:30.6, and Kirsten Kaminski, placing 77th in 20:55.5.

Fresh off her individual title at the Pre-National meet two weeks ago, New Hampshire’s Elinor Purrier won the women’s individual title for the third consecutive year, leading the Wildcats to their fifth straight team title with 37 points. Purrier finished in 16:45.9. New Hampshire also claimed the second place individual finish with Shannon Murdock crossing the line behind Purrier in 17:33.5. UMass Lowell finished second overall with 57 points, finishing five runners in the top 16. The Riverhawks narrowly defeated Stony Brook, which scored 58 points after sweeping places three, four, and five.

The women’s race featured a total of 84 competitors from all nine America East institutions. 

Next: On Friday, November 10, UAlbany will head west to Buffalo for the NCAA DI Northeast Regional Championships.
