BOSTON – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team has been predicted to finish second in the America East preseason coaches’ poll, the conference offices announced Thursday.
The preseason poll is voted on by the league’s head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own team. UAlbany received 41 points overall, landing one spot behind preseason conference favorite Stony Brook.
The Seawolves earned 49 points atop the poll as the unanimous favorite. The lone additional first-place vote went to UMBC, who was picked third with 39 points. Stony Brook has won the last five America East titles.
UAlbany finished second during the 2017 regular season with a 5-1 America East record. The Great Danes met Stony Brook in the finals for the sixth consecutive season, falling to the Seawolves 15-7. In the last five years, UAlbany has gone 24-5 in conference play.
The Great Danes return their second-leading scorer from 2017, Emma Powlin, who scored 28 goals and recorded 47 assists as an All-Conference Second Team selection. Also returning are America East All-Rookie selections Erin Leghart and Sam Tortora.
UAlbany begins its season on Saturday, February 17 at Yale. The Great Danes will play their home opener on Wednesday, February 28 against Dartmouth after three games on the road to open the season.
