Women's Lacrosse Faces Stony Brook In America East Final

ALBANY, N.Y. – For the ninth consecutive season, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team will play in the America East championship game, and for the eighth consecutive season, their opponent in the title game will be Stony Brook.

 

The winner of Saturday’s game will earn the America East’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  UAlbany is looking to advance to the tournament for the fifth time in program history, having last appeared in 2017.

 

UAlbany (11-6, 6-1 AE) defeated three-seed New Hampshire in the semifinals in a rematch of the team’s most thrilling regular-season victory.  The Wildcats led by as many as four and took a one-goal lead into halftime before a seven-goal run from UAlbany put the Great Danes ahead for good. 

 

Offensive Player of the Year Madison Conway, who scored the game-winning goal against the Wildcats in the regular season, led UAlbany’s offense against New Hampshire in the semifinals, scoring six goals and recording three assists.  Team points leader Sam Tortora, who set up Conway’s game-winner in the regular season, scored four goals and had five assists.  Rookie of the Year Hailey Carroll scored four goals and won seven draws, while Kyla Zapolski scored three goals with three assists.

 

The top-seeded Seawolves dispatched four-seed UMBC in their semifinal matchup, taking an 11-1 halftime lead before winning 17-6.  Stony Brook dominated the Retrievers in nearly all facets of the game, outshooting UMBC 35-16, outdrawing 15-9, and winning 25 ground balls to UMBC’s 10.  Midfielder of the Year Ally Kennedy scored six goals and recorded 10 assists to lead the Seawolves’ offense.

 

Stony Brook has won at least a share of the regular season for the seventh-straight season, extending their conference winning streak to 32 games, 42 including games played in the America East Tournament.

 

Saturday’s game will feature 11 of 13 players named to the America East All-Conference First Team, as well as each of the five major award winners from the 2019 regular season. 

 

The first meeting between UAlbany and Stony Brook this season saw the Seawolves pull away from the Great Danes in the second half.  Stony Brook built a 10-7 halftime lead, but scored five of the first six goals of the second half to take command of the game.  Conway finished with four goals and one assist in the game, recording a hat-trick in the first half in just over 20 minutes of game time.
