Women's Lacrosse Visits UConn

UAlbany Sports Information   03-12-2019

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team will play its third-straight game on the road Wednesday with a visit to Connecticut.

UAlbany (3-2) has lost its last two games, both to ranked opponents.  First, the Great Danes fell at the hands of then-#22 Stanford at home despite a furious comeback attempt to close the second half.  Next, the Danes lost at then-#19 Penn State in the team’s first road game of the season.  UAlbany held a 6-3 halftime lead over the Nittany Lions but were outscored 8-3 in the second half.  Junior midfielder Sam Tortora scored three goals and recorded five assists, contributing to eight of UAlbany’s nine goals on the afternoon.

UConn has lost each of its first five games to start the season, including two against ranked opponents Syracuse and defending national champion James Madison.  The Huskies were supposed to visit Ivy League rival Dartmouth last week but cold weather postponed the game to later in the season.

The Huskies are playing in the American Athletic Conference for the first time this year, moving over from the Big East following the conclusion of the 2018 season.  UConn moved to the AAC with Cincinnati, East Carolina, Florida, Temple, and Vanderbilt for this year’s inaugural season of women’s lacrosse.  Old Dominion moved into the Big East from the Atlantic Sun Conference.

UAlbany’s latest loss has dropped them to third in the America East standings behind Vermont (4-1) and New Hampshire (4-2).  Preseason favorite and defending conference champion Stony Brook is currently fourth at 2-3.

Following the game against UConn, the Great Danes will return home to host Siena on Saturday in part one of a double-header day with the men’s team.
