HOW IT HAPPENED
UAlbany began executing great connecting passes from the start of regulation. In just under two minutes of play, Dana Bozek took the ball from the outside of the circle to find Ghislaine Beerkens within feet from the goal. Beerkens shot to the left of the goalie finding the back corner.
Multiple defensive stops were made by UAlbany, including an important stop in the 32nd minute by Frederike Helmke in a fast transition by the UVM midfield. In the 39th minute, Beerkens fired her second goal of the game, but this time from the stick of Katie MacCallum. Facing away from the goal, MacCallum set Beerkens up with a perfect pass to tap in. Danes led 2-0.
Following the assist, MacCallum took the momentum into the 59th minute. Camryn Dias found MacCallum who chipped the ball to the right of the goalie to put the Danes up 3-0.
Then an important play came from Ghislaine Beerkens in 61st minute. Beerkens dribbled down the field making her way through nearly every Catamount defender. When passing the goalie, a solo Vermont defender was left to defend the goal. Without time to react, Beerken shot the ball hitting the UVM defender's arm which earned UAlbany a penalty stroke. Junior captain, Frederike Helmke took the stoke and found the left upper half of the goal.
Finally, in the 67th minute Vermont was able to capitalize, creating a goal from junior Landon Warren. However, it was not enough to stop the Great Danes making the final score of 4-1.
COMMENTS FROM THE COACHING STAFF
“It was a good conference win this afternoon. I thought the players played hard today and I have to give credit to Vermont who were well organized. We were happy with the score and the performance, and we will move onto Maine next week,” said associate head coach Andy Thornton.
On Friday, October 6th UAlbany will travel to Maine to face the Black Bears at 8 P.M.
