#20 Field Hockey to Face Defending National Champion
ALBANY, NY—This weekend #20 UAlbany Field Hockey will face both competitors featured in the 2016 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship, #5 Delaware and #7 North Carolina.
@ Delaware: Friday, September 22nd, 6 P.M. Newark, Delaware
North Carolina: Sunday, September 24th, 1 P.M. on Alumni Turf
No. 5 Delaware is the 2016 defending National Champion. Delaware will step on the turf 6-1 on the season. Their most notable win was a 2-0 victory over #3 Penn State. The Blue Hens have tallied 4.14 goals scored per game versus their opponents’ 1.43 per game.
Player to Watch: Leading the Blue Hens is Greta Nauck from Krefeld, Germany. In 2016, Nauck was named as a First Team All-American and was awarded the CSWA Honda Sport Award for field hockey leading the nation in points (76) and goals (33). This season she totals 17 points with 7 goals.
Against UAlbany: In program history the Great Danes have competed against Delaware five times. UAlbany is 4-1 in the series. Last season, the Blue Hens took the contest 3-1. The Danes’ lone goal was shot by current sophomore Dana Bozek.
#7 NORTH CAROLINA
Since 2007, UNC field hockey has claimed a spot in the NCAA Final Four for the last eight out of ten years. Additionally, since the start of the program the Tar Heels have competed in 17 championship matches, with six NCAA titles to their name. This season the Tar Heels are 7-2 with impressive wins over #8 Boston College and #13 JMU. North Carolina is currently accumulating 3.56 goals per game and outshooting their opponents 19-6.
Player to Watch: Junior, Ashley Hoffman leads the Tar Heels with 16 points and 7 goals. Last week Hoffman was named the ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Against UAlbany: North Carolina leads the series against the Great Danes 2-0. The last meeting occurred in 2015 with a score of 4-2. One of Great Dane goal came of the stick of current senior, Anna Bottino.
