Seven Newcomers Top Off 2019 Roster
ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany field hockey head coach Phil Sykes has announced the addition of seven players to the Great Danes roster for 2019. The class features six freshmen and one transfer spanning three states and two countries.
"We are very excited about our incoming class,” said Sykes. “We have seven new players and I think they will add a great deal to our team. The last few years we have had a very good team dynamic and I think these girls will contribute to this. Last season was one of my personal favorites and I think this team can go in a similar direction."
The newcomers will join a program that swept the America East regular season and tournament championship last fall. The six-time America East champions will return 11 letter-winners from 2018.
Pelou Bakker: D – 5’5” – Blaricum, Netherlands (SG Huizermaat)
Quick Facts: Bakker comes to UAlbany with plenty experience in her home country. She has grown up a part of the well-known clubs Laren and Spanderbosch over the years. Bakker, a defender, led Laren to a pair of 1e Klasse League Championships in 2016 and 2017. Following the 2018 season, Bakker was invited to make the transfer to play on the Spanderbosch first senior women’s team, competing in the 2e Klasse senior women’s league.
Lillian Hickey: F – 5’6” – Hoosick, N.Y. (Hoosick Falls Central School)
Quick Facts: Hickey comes to the Great Danes fresh off an outstanding high school career at Hoosick Falls. As captain in 2018 she led Hoosick Falls to league, sectional and regional titles. Hickey graduated Hoosick Falls as the programs’ all-time leading scorer and finished her field hockey career with an astonishing 73-6 record.
Mackenzie Hilditch: MF – 5’4” – Paoli, Penn. (Great Valley HS)
Quick Facts: A three-time First Team All-League selection, Hilditch led Great Valley High School to the Ches Mont American Championship in 2018. Hilditch plays club field hockey for the Philly Hockey Club.
Stephanie Moncavage: F/MF – 5’8” – Nazareth, Penn. (Nazareth HS)
Quick Facts: Monocavage joins the Great Danes following a strong four years at Nazareth High School. As a senior, Moncavage and her squad finished the regular season with a 13-5 regular clip to solidify Nazareth’s first playoff appearance in four years. She finished her senior campaign with a career-best 18 goals and five assists.
Julie Rodijk: D – 5’7” – (Willem de Zwijger college Bussum)
Quick Facts: The second new Great Dane from the Netherlands, Rodijk most recently played with the Huizer HC U18 in her native Netherlands. Prior to that, she was a youth member of Huizer HC U16 TopKlasse participating in the highest youth league in her region.
Alexa Wentz: MF – 5’4” – Whitney Point, N.Y. (Whitney Point HS)
Quick Facts: A five-time New York State Class C State Champion, Wentz comes to UAlbany from Whitney Point High School. A captain during her senior season, Wentz led her team to an 18-2 record while notching 13 points (4g, 5a) along the way.
Hanna Zarrilli: MF – 5’8” – Wall, N.J. (Indiana)
Quick Facts: Zarrilli joins UAlbany having previously competed for two seasons at Indiana. The New Jersey native appeared in 35 games on the backline for the Hoosiers. Prior to Indiana, Zarrilla was a multi-sport athlete at Wall High School. Zarrilla led her high school squad to three district championships, including runner-up finishes at the state finals in 2013 and 2015. Zarrilli, a prolific scorer, finished her high school career with 134 points (50g, 34a).
