Pair of Great Danes Earn All-American Honors
GILBERT, Ariz. – Three members of the UAlbany field hockey team were selected to the 2018 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American teams, as announced earlier this eek.
Senior Frederike Helmke was selected to the second team and redshirt-junior Melissa Nealon received third team honors. Helmke is now a two-time All-American after earning second team accolades a year ago, while this is the first All-America honor for Nealon.
Including this year’s selections, UAlbany has had three First Team All-Americas, eight Second Team All-Americans and three Third Team All-Americans all-time.
The two players were instrumental to the Great Dane’s success this year, which features a 16-5 record, the America East regular season and tournament titles and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. The duo was tabbed First Team All-Northeast Region last week.
UAlbany’s team captain, Helmke posted nine goals, five assists and 23 points, all career highs. She ranked second on the team in assists and third in goals and points. The 2018 America East Defensive Player of the Year, was named first team All-America East and to the America East All-Tournament team and garnered America East All-Academic team honors.
Nealon started all 21 games in the cage for the Great Danes, accumulating a .813 save percentage to rank first in the NCAA. She finished the year third in Division I with a .80 goals against average and eighth with a .750 win percentage. The Mechanicville, N.Y. native, was named the America East Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and was a first team All-America East selection. Nealon also garnered America East All-Academic and All-Tournament team honors.
