Four Great Danes Named NFHCA All-Region
ALBANY, N.Y. — Four members of the UAlbany field hockey team were selected to the 2018 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Team, as announced last week.
The four Great Danes helped lead UAlbany to a 16-5 record in 2018 and the America East regular season and tournament titles. UAlbany earned a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third time in the last five years.
UAlbany’s team captain, Helmke posted nine goals, five assists and 23 points, all career highs. She ranked second on the team in assists and third in goals and points. The 2018 America East Defensive Player of the Year, was named first team All-America East and to the America East All-Tournament team and garnered America East All-Academic team honors.
Nealon started all 21 games in the cage for the Great Danes, accumulating a .813 save percentage to rank first in the NCAA. She finished the year third in Division I with a .80 goals against average and eighth with a .750 win percentage. The Mechanicville, N.Y. native, was named the America East Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and was a first team All-America East selection. Nealon also garnered America East All-Academic and All-Tournament team honors.
Bozek ranked second on the team with a career-best 11 goals and 26 points. She was tabbed first team All-America East and to the America East All-Tournament team this season.
Beerkens led UAlbany with 13 goals and 27 points in 2018, while adding one assist. Her goals and points both marked personal bests for the sophomore who was tabbed the America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region team announcement is the first in a list of postseason awards to come from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) over the next several weeks. Next to be announced are Longstreth/NFHCA All-American teams (December 5) and the Longstreth/NFHCA National Collegiate Player of the Year (December 10).
