Trio of Great Danes Sweep #AEFH Weekly Awards
ALBANY, N.Y. — Following a perfect weekend for the No. 23 UAlbany field hockey team, a trio of Great Danes garnered America East Weekly awards, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Ghislaine Beerkens, Frederike Helmke and Elaina Burchell were awarded for their efforts, as each of the players earned their first career conference honors.
Beerkens paced the Great Danes with six points over the weekend. The sophomore netted her first career hat trick in the squad’s 4-3 win against UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon. Beerkens completed the hat trick when she knotted the game at 3-3 with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest. The forward also took a game-high four shots in UAlbany’s 2-1 double overtime win against New Hampshire on Sunday.
Helmke, a captain, helped the Great Danes to two wins against conference foes behind five total points (2g, 1a). Helmke scored the game-winning goal against the River Hawks in the 65th minute. The back capped the weekend with a three-point performance against the Wildcats where she tallied a goal before assisting on the game-winner in overtime.
Burchell played the hero on Sunday when she lifted UAlbany to a 2-1 overtime win against New Hampshire to give the team a 3-1 mark in league play. The rookie took two shots and scored her fourth goal of the season, which ranks fourth on the team.
UAlbany continues its five-game home stand home on Friday, Oct. 12 against Vermont at 3:00 p.m.
