ALBANY, N.Y. – Two UAlbany student-athletes, Paula Heuser of field hockey and Laini Leindecker of volleyball, have been honored as America East Fall Scholar Athletes for the 2016-17 season.
Each Heuser and Leindecker are repeating as America East Scholar-Athletes, with each winning in the 2015-16 season. Heuser is a three-time Scholar-Athlete, earning the honor each of the past three seasons.
UAlbany tied for the most America East Fall Scholar-Athletes with two with New Hampshire. Last season, UAlbany had a total of six America East Scholar-Athletes.
Heuser was a finalist for the Honda Award for field hockey, earning NFHCA First Team All-America and America East Midfielder of the Year. The senior team captain finished in the top-20 in Division I in goals, assists and points per game, tallying 47 points from 17 goals and 13 assists. The three-time America East All-Academic Team member stands with a 3.91 GPA in business administration.
Leindecker joined the 1,000-kill and 1,000-dig club in 2016, earning America East All-Conference honors for the third straight year. The senior team captain had a team-high 280 kills and 15 double-doubles, adding 301 digs and 18 service aces. She was on the America East All-Academic Team for the second straight year, holding a 3.71 GPA in human biology.
The rest of the America East Scholar-Athletes were Elinor Purrier of UNH for women’s cross country, Jesse Orach of Maine for men’s cross country, Chris Wingate of UNH for men’s soccer and Katie Connolly of Hartford for women’s soccer.
