ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany men's lacrosse assistant coach Merrick Thomson will serve in the same capacity for the Canadian National Team for the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men’s World Championship, announced on Wednesday.
“It is a great honor whenever you have the opportunity to represent your country,” said Thomson. “I am excited for the process to begin to compete for a world championship.”
This is the first time Thomson will serve as a coach for the senior-level Team Canada. He previously coached the U-19 Canadian National Team in the 2016 U-19 World Championship, helping the squad to a silver medal finish. He also formerly played with Team Canada in the field game in 2010 and the indoor game in 2007.
Thomson will be an assistant coach for the offense on Team Canada. He currently serves as UAlbany’s offensive coordinator, entering his third season in 2018.
The 2018 FIL Men’s World Championship will be held in Netanya, Israel from July 12-21. Team Canada is the defending world champion, defeating the United States 8-5 in the 2014 World Championship in Denver, Colorado. More than 50 nations are set to compete in the 2018 championships.
Thomson will serve as an assistant coach under Randy Mearns, who has been the head coach of Team Canada since 2014.
