SAVANNAH, Ga. – Winning nine of 17 America East Tournament titles, the University at Albany has earned the Stuart P. Haskell Jr. Commissioner's Cup for the fifth consecutive athletic season and the sixth time in history.

The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East as determined by a scoring system that rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 17 sports.

UAlbany had a powerful year in America East play in the 2016-17 season, earning a league record nine America East Tournament titles: men's soccer, women's soccer, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's basketball, men's outdoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's lacrosse and softball.  In addition, field hockey, women's soccer and men's lacrosse all had America East regular season titles.

"This has been a historic year for the Great Danes, winning our fifth consecutive America East Commissioner's Cup with nine championships is a tremendous achievement,” said UAlbany director of athletics Mark Benson. "To win it in a year where we celebrated our 100th Division I Championship makes it even more special as we can thank and recognize not only our current student-athletes but the thousands of student-athletes, coaches and staff over the last 15 years who have helped build a winning tradition at UAlbany."

The cup was awarded at the America East annual awards dinner in Savannah, Georgia.

UAlbany has been awarded the Commissioner's Cup each of the past five seasons dating back to the 2012-13 year, winning its first in the 2004-05 season.

“We want to thank our university leadership and community for providing the support necessary to field a broad-based program that achieves both athletic and academic success,” said Benson. “Over 450 student-athletes at UAlbany, in addition to the success in competition, maintain over a 3.0 GPA.

UAlbany had 439 points, just four shy of the league record of 443 by UAlbany last year and Delaware in 1995-96.  Women's basketball was the biggest contributor of points with 48, while women's soccer had 46.
