Freshman Madison Walker shot a first-round 76 to lead the University at Albany women’s golf team on the first day of play in the NCAA Auburn Regional in Opelika, Ala., on Monday, May 6.
As a team, the No. 17-seeded Great Danes shot 309 (+21) to stand 16th headed into the second of three rounds at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala. UAlbany is just two shots back of Clemson, which is 14th.
"Overall, I think we can be disappointed with where we stand after the first round. We certainly didn't get off to the strongest of starts because of the nerves on the first few holes, but they held it together and battled all day long.
"Even though we squandered some shots out there, to sit only three shots back from 12th place and within range of teams like Clemson, Houston and Kennesaw State, all of whom are ranked in the Top 35 of the country, I'll take it. I'm proud of them!
"We definitely know where we can improve tomorrow, and hopefully getting off to a better start will give them some confidence to catch some of those teams and move up the leaderboard!"
