Women's golf set to begin play at Yale Invitational
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s golf team will compete in its fourth event of the fall Friday when play opens in the Yale Invitational, a three-day tournament of 18 holes each at the Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn.
The Great Danes will be returning to a course on which they played well last season, with Megan Henry and Annika Espino finishing tied for 20th at Yale’s 2017 event. They finished with scores of 74-76 (+8) in an event shortened to two days because of rain.
“We are very excited to continue our season with such a prestigious tournament at Yale this weekend,” UAlbany Head Coach Colleen Cashman-McSween said. “Being that this tournament is 3 days of 18 holes, it is a little different than others because it will allow us rest up and to regroup after every round while adjusting our game plan if needed. Four of the five players have been to Yale previously where we played well last year, so they know what to expect and we feel very comfortable going into the event.
“Currently, this group of players is very versatile, as we have all five players averaging under 78 and three of the players at 75 or better. Our team scoring average is 301, which is already eight shots better than last Fall. If we can take advantage of the par 5’s and limit the number of three-putts on the very large greens at Yale, I think we will have a great chance to finish atop the leaderboard. I say it every week, but I’m very excited to see what this team can do in the future!”
The Great Danes are coming off a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams at the Boston College Intercollegiate on Sept. 25.
