Fujihara Leads UAlbany to a 2nd Place Finish at the 2017 MAAC Championship

LAKE BUENA VISTA, F.L.—Trailing behind by six strokes, the University at Albany Women’s Golf team claimed second place at the MAAC Championship this afternoon. The team shot three round scores of 324-312-309, for a total score of 945, +81. Quinnipiac took home the team title shooting 939 overall (320, 307, 312). Behind UAlbany was Monmouth (961), Dayton (975), and Siena (1006). In sixth place it was Hartford (1011), followed by Niagra (1012), Fairfield (1039), and La Salle (1233).

That was a tough loss, " said senior Paige Fujihara. "We put our all in the last round to recover but unfortunately it wasn't enough.Considering this was majority of the teams first conference they did very well. I am so proud of them for the hard work they have put in these last couple of weeks. Big things are going to happen with this team in the future, I am sure of it,” said Fujihara.

Fujihara finished her last round of golf as a Great Dane placing second overall with a score of 233 (78-75-80, +17), just two strokes away from the individual title. Following two strokes behind Fujihara was Helga Einarsdottir who tied for third with a score of 235 (83-78-74, +19). Next was Megan Henry who shot round scores of 79-83-77, which totaled 239 overall (+23).  After Henry was the 2015 individual champion, Annie Lee who tied for 13th with a score of 241 (84-79-78, +25). Finally, Caroline Juillat placed 23rd and shot 252 overall (85-80-87, +36).

“I am pleased that we had 3 players in the Top 10 and it was a bitter sweet finish for Paige finishing 2nd in her final tournament as a Great Dane," said head coach Colleen Cashman-McSween. "We are a very young team with 3 Freshman competing and with some hard work and more tournament experience over the summer I'm looking forward to everyone coming back a little more confident and ready for a new year,” said Cashman-McSween.

Paige Fujihara, Helga Einarsdottir, and Megan Henry were placed on the All-MAAC Team with their top-ten finish. Paige Fujihara and Annie Lee were also added to the MAAC All-Academic Team for their academic achievements.
