The University at Albany has tied for first place in the 2017 Women’s Golf MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Great Danes received a total of 71 points with the highest number of first place votes (5) in the poll, making it the third season in a row to be selected to finish first in the MAAC Women’s Golf Championship.
UAlbany is looking to battle back after placing fifth in the MAAC Championship trailing to Quinnipiac who took home the title.
The Great Danes return strong upper classmen leadership including junior, Annie Songeun Lee the former MAAC 2014-15 Rookie of the Year and two-time all-conference selection. During the fall season, Lee finished second at the Rutgers invitational and was named the MAAC Golfer of the month in September. Senior, Paige Fujihara will help lead the Great Danes this season. Fujihara finished in the top ten at the Quinnipiac Classic, which led UAlbany to its best fall tournament finish of second place.
Last year’s MAAC champion, Quinnipiac, tied the Great Danes with 71 points overall in the Coaches’ Poll with only 3 first place votes. Monmouth finished third with a total of 60 points followed by Siena in fourth place with 52 points. Dayton was the only team other than Quinnipiac and UAlbany that received a fist place vote, with a total of 51 finishing fifth. Hartford came close behind with 35 points, followed by Niagara (29), Fairfield (27), and La Salle (9).
UAlbany will tees off to start their spring season March 13-14 at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Florida at the Spring Break Shootout.
