ALBANY, N.Y. -- Continuing to prepare for the upcoming 2012 season, the University at Albany football program took to University Field Saturday morning for their second of three intrasquad scrimmages this month. The offense, wearing white, and the defense in purple battled each other for nearly an hour and a half under the direction of head coach Bob Ford, who is entering his 40th season at the helm this fall.
Some notable performances from the scrimmage included sophomore quarterback Will Fiacchi passing for 65 yards on 12 attempts, including an 18-yard pass for a touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Rhakeem Wiggins. Wiggins made a beautiful over the shoulder catch in the right corner of the end zone for the score.
Sophomore Jake Meek also took some snaps in the quarterback position, completing a 6-yard and 14-yard pass for gains. In addition, the swift-footed native of Penfield, N.Y. showed off his speed on a 61-yard kick return, but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
Sophomore tailback Omar Osbourne totaled 36 receiving yards, while redshirt freshman Presley Beauvais carried the ball eight times, including a 17-yard gain. Karl Allison, also a redshirt freshman, tallied a 20-yard rush with six carries on the day.
Defensively, freshman JoJo McClary and redshirt freshman Nick Beach led the team with four tackles each, while senior Joe Fasano brought down three. The purple squad recorded eight sacks in the morning exhibition, piloted by senior Chris Wilk's two, including one for a loss of six yards.
The defense also forced two fumbles, highlighted by sophomore Christian Dorsey's 60-yard recovery that fired up the sidelines, as the scrimmage came near an end.
The Great Danes will have one more internal battle next Friday night before hosting Colgate University in the first week of the official 2012 season. UAlbany will take on the Raiders Saturday, September 1 at 6 p.m. on University Field.
