VESTAL, N.Y. --  The University at Albany softball team won in thrilling fashion to claim their fifth America East Conference regular season title, defeating Binghamton 2-1, on Sunday, May 5 at BU Sports Complex. Junior Lauren Alcorn’s two-run shot to left field was the difference, as the Great Danes claimed the conference’s top seed.

Junior Brittany MacFawn got her third straight nod and second straight victory in the rubber game of the three-game series. Fittingly, the right-handed hurler also broke the program’s single-season inning’s pitched record in a complete game effort. Her seven innings of work pushed her season log to 229.1, surpassing Casey Halloran’s ’06 record of 227. MacFawn passed Halloran’s single-season K record yesterday.

The Bearcats were the first to score as junior Jessica Bump homered to left field in the fourth inning. It was one of only two hits allowed off MacFawn on the day. The Great Danes twice missed opportunities with a runner gunned down at the plate, one in each the third and fourth inning.

Heading into the final two frames, UAlbany (35-13, 15-2 AE) put on their rally caps once again, willing their way to a second straight victory over No. 2 seeded Binghamton (29-15, 14-4 AE). Alcorn stepped to the plate following a single by junior Charlise Castro. She rocketed her fourth homer of the season, just reaching over the left field fence.

MacFawn (26-7) finished out the last two innings – stranding a runner on first in the seventh. She pitched her third consecutive complete game of the weekend, 30th of the season. She pitched 20 innings over the two-day stretch. Her final line on Sunday included 10 strikeouts, no walks and one earned run. Junior Demi Laney (15-6) took the loss for the Bearcats. She allowed five hits and two earned runs in a complete game effort.

UAlbany will head back to Vestal for the 2013 America East Tournament, Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11. The Great Danes play their first postseason game against No. 4 seeded Stony Brook on Thursday at 1 p.m.
