Mitchell Highlights Big International Weekend for Track & Field

KINGSTON, Jamaica, SACRAMENTO, Calif., & PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago – Four current University at Albany track & field student-athletes competed this past weekend.  Adrian Mitchell, fresh off his All-America Second Team performance in the men's javelin at NCAA Outdoor Championships returned home to his native Jamaica to compete in Jamaica Senior Outdoor Championships.  Fellow rising sophomores Hannah Reinhardt and Omahri Sturdivant participated in the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships.  Stephani Osuji, representing Nigeria, competed at Trinidad and Tobago's National Championships.  Finally, UAlbany alumna Grace Claxton also competed at Jamaica Senior Outdoor Championships for her native Puerto Rico in an effort to qualify for IAAF World Outdoor Championships in London later this summer.

Mitchell highlighted the group of four, placing first overall at Senior Championships in the men's javelin with a mark of 220-04.00.  He won the event by more than nine feet.  Not to be outdone, Claxton ran 56.10 in the women's 400m hurdles, finishing with the eighth-fastest time of the day and earning a qualifying berth into World Championships.

At Junior Nationals, Reinhardt kicked off proceedings in the women's 5,000m.  She placed 12th overall in 17:52.65.  The following day, Sturdivant competed in the men's triple jump, but fouled on each of his three attempts.  Later, Reinhardt returned to the track in the women's 3,000m.  She placed sixth overall in 10:12.00, earning Junior All-America accolades.

Osuji kicked off her time at Trinidad National Championships in style, tying teammate Dayleen Santana Rodriguez's school record in the 100m of 11.62.  Osuji ran the 13th fastest time in the preliminary round, and came back with an 11.83, good for fifth place in her finals heat and 13th overall.  Finally, Osuji led off Nigeria's 4x100m relay, helping the team finish second overall in 43.84.

IAAF World Outdoor Championships will take place at Olympic Stadium in London starting on August 4.
