Two Great Danes Honored as America East Spring Scholar-Athletes

ALBANY, N.Y. – A pair of Great Danes have been recognized as America East Spring Scholar-Athletes, announced by the league on Thursday morning.

Kyle McClancy has been selected as the Scholar-Athlete for men’s lacrosse while Sarah Petzold is chosen as the Scholar-Athlete for softball.

This award nominates each McClancy and Petzold for America East Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year respectively, which will be announced by the league in July. 

In total, this gives UAlbany three America East Scholar-Athletes in the 2017-18 season, along with Daniel Krutzen for men’s soccer.

McClancy repeats as the America East Scholar-Athlete for Men’s Lacrosse, also being named the league’s Man of the Year for the 2017-18 season.  The two-time USILA Scholar All-American and three-time member of the America East All-Academic Team graduated with a 3.87 GPA in business administration.  On the field, he earned USILA and Inside Lacrosse All-America recognition, starting all 19 games with 29 goals, 19 assists and 36 ground balls, helping the team to its first-ever trip to Championship Weekend.

Petzold earned her first-ever America East Scholar-Athlete award after earning CoSIDA Academic All-District I honors.  In the classroom, she stands with a 3.90 GPA following her junior season, joining the America East All-Academic Team.  She was an America East All-Conference First Team outfielder on the diamond, starting all 48 games, hitting .298 with seven home runs, 30 runs and 35 RBI, helping UAlbany earn its second consecutive America East Tournament and NCAA Tournament berth.
