UAlbany Sports Information   11-09-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – The 2017-18 basketball season has arrived and the University at Albany women’s team is set for their season opener at Maryland.

Last year, the Great Danes went 21-12 with a 12-4 record in the America East. The season culminated with a sixth-consecutive America East title and NCAA tournament berth. After drawing top-seed Connecticut in the first round, the Great Danes fell by a score of 116-55 to end the 2016-17 campaign.

UAlbany returns nine from last year’s team and adds a group of five freshmen and one transfer. Jessica Féquière leads the returning squad after leading the team in rebounding last year and ranking second in scoring.

The team will contend with the loss of leading scorer Imani Tate and third leading scorer Bailey Hixson, who together combined for nearly 27 points per game.

After finishing second in the regular season last year behind New Hampshire, the Great Danes swept through the America East tournament to win their sixth-straight conference title in head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee’s first season at the helm. The Danes met Maine in the final for the second consecutive season, dispatching the Black Bears 66-50 at SEFCU Arena after splitting the two regular season meetings.

Maryland went 32-3 last season en route to a third-straight Big Ten title, defeating Purdue in the Big Ten championship game 74-64. After drawing a three-seed in the NCAA tournament, the Terrapins advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, falling 77-63 to 10-seed Oregon. Maryland finished the season ranked eighth nationally in the coaches poll.

After playing at Maryland, the Great Danes will play one more road game, November 16 at Monmouth, before hosting the 2017-18 home opener against Fordham on November 19.
