Baseball Opens 2018 Season at James Madison

UAlbany Sports Information   02-21-2018

ALBANY, N.Y. – On Friday, the University at Albany baseball team will begin its 2018 regular season with the first game of a three-day, three-game series at James Madison.

The Great Danes are coming of a 26-26 2017 campaign that saw them earn the four-seed in the America East tournament and win their first two tournament games. One more victory would have had UAlbany in the final, but the Danes dropped their next two to eventual champion UMBC and runner-up Maine.

Despite the disappointing finish to the season, UAlbany continued its year-to-year upward trajectory, improving by three wins and one tournament seed from the year before. The Great Danes return an experience-laden squad that features just three seniors on the roster. Among the returners are six of the seven individuals to earn America East All-Conference honors in 2017, including First Team selections Dominic Savino and Connor Powers.

James Madison has already played four games this season, accumulating a record of 3-1. The Dukes won their first three games at High Point before dropping their fourth at Liberty.

The Great Danes have holes to fill behind the plate, at first base, and in the outfield, positions that were manned by fifth-year seniors in 2017. However, a promising freshman class and an abundance of returning experience, including the entire weekend rotation and middle infield, will look to step up to fill those roles.

Following the opening series, the Great Danes will visit Towson for another three-day, three-game series next weekend. The following weekend, UAlbany will visit the west coast for four games at Seattle.
