Baseball Notches Two Wins At Towson

Short Story: UAlbany won two games against Towson Saturday after Friday’s game was suspended in the eighth inning due to darkness.

Coach Mueller: “Today’s two wins were a good step for this club.  We were able to win the series today and look to continue on building momentum going forward.”

  • In his second career start, Dominic Savino lasted 5.1 innings allowing just one run with eight strikeouts
  • Patrick Lagravinese hit 1-4 with two RBIs in the leadoff spot in the first game
  • Connor Powers hit 2-5 with a triple and three RBIs in the first game
  • Travis Collins hit 3-5 with two RBIs in the first game
  • Mark Wangenstein and Nick Kondo drew four walks each in the first game

Game One

  • The game was suspended in the top of the eighth due to darkness with UAlbany leading 14-2.  The game was concluded before the start of Saturday’s regularly scheduled matchup
  • UAlbany scored one run in the top of the first.  With one out and the bases loaded, Travis Collins hit a sacrifice fly to left center, scoring Brad Malm from third.
  • UAlbany scored once in the top of the fourth.  Ryan Hernandez reached safely on fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt.  Two batters later, Nick Kondo hit a double down the line, scoring Hernandez from second.
  • UAlbany scored seven runs in the top of the fifth.  Malm worked a leadoff walk and scored in the next at-bat when Connor Powers hit a triple to right.  Marc Wangenstein walked before Collins hit a single to right, scoring Powers.  Matt Codispoti singled up the middle, scoring Wangenstein from second.
  • With two on and two out in the top of the fifth, Kondo and Patrick Lagravinese worked back-to-back walks, forcing in Collins from third.  Malm was hit by a pitch, scoring Codispoti from third.
  • Towson made a pitching change, and Powers hit a two-RBI single that scored Kindo and Lagravinese.
  • UAlbany scored five more runs in the top of the sixth.  Codispoti worked a leadoff walk, and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.  Hernandez worked a walk.  When Drew Guerra came to the plate pinch hitting for Collins, another wild pitch scored Codispoti and allowed Hernandez to reach second.  Guerra was hit by a pitch and both runners on base advanced on another wild pitch.  Kondo worked a walk to load the bases, and Hernandez was able to score on another wild pitch.  Lagravinese hit a single to third that scored Guerra.    Kondo scored on a wild pitch, as did Lagravinese two batters later.
  • Towson scored the next two runs, one in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh.
  • UAlbany added one final run in the top of the eighth when play resumed Saturday.  Wangenstein worked a leadoff walk, and advanced to third when Collins singled to left center.  Peter Torres walked to load the bases, and two batters later Wangenstein scored on a wild pitch.
  • Towson scored one run in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the final score to 15-3.

Game Two

  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning.
  • Josh Gurnack worked a leadoff walk before Nick Kondo was hit by a pitch.  Patrick Lagravinese walked to load the bases and then Gurnack scored on a wild pitch
  • UAlbany scored once more in the top of the eighth.  With one out, Ryan Hernandez doubled down the left field line, and advanced to third when Gurnack struck out but reached safely on a wild pitch in the next at bat.  Kondo was hit by another pitch to load the bases, and next Lagravinese reached safely on a fielder’s choice that saw Hernandez cross the plate to bring the final score to 2-0.

Next: The series with Towson will conclude Sunday, March 4 with one game starting at 1:00 p.m.
