Baseball Names 2017-18 Team Captains

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team has announced four captains to lead the team during the 2017-18 season. Each of the the four selections will serve as team captain for the first time.

“Our team is excited to announce these four student-athletes as captains for the 2017-18 year,” said head coach Jon Mueller. “These four exemplify hard work, commitment to excellence in the classroom, and possess qualities we look for in leaders both on and off the field.”

J.T. Genovese, a redshirt-senior righty from Katonah, N.Y., went 4-2 last season with a 4.38 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and 26 walks. He started eight of his 12 appearances last season, lasting a total of 39.0 innings. He ranked in a tie for eighth in the America East in wins, and twice recorded six strikeouts in a game, vs. Marist and at Maine.

Connor Powers, a redshirt-senior outfielder from Rockville Center, N.Y., hit .323 with 17 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 29 RBIs in 51 games last season. Powers led the team with a .398 on base percentage. In 50 starts, Powers had separate hitting streaks of 10 and 13 games each. He ended the season ranked 10th in the America East in batting, ninth in hits, and tied for second in doubles. For his efforts, he was one of two Great Danes named First Team All-Conference. 

Matt Codispoti, a junior catcher from Patchogue, N.Y., made 16 starts last season, splitting time at catcher and designated hitter. He hit .211 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 21 games.

Patrick Lagravinese, a junior infielder from St. James, N.Y., hit .279 with seven doubles, one triple, one home run, and 21 RBIs in 41 games last season. He made 32 total starts at three positions: first base, third base, and designated hitter. Lagravinese ranked second on the team in on base percentage last year (.395).

The 2016-17 Great Danes improved by three wins year-over-year, finishing with a record of 26-26 overall and 10-13 in the America East. UAlbany was one win away from the America East title game after winning their first two games of the America East Tournament.
