Krutzen, Pinheiro Named Scholar All-America

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – One day after releasing the 2017 Scholar All-Region teams, the United Soccer Coaches announced its selections for the 2017 Scholar All-America Teams. The University at Albany men’s soccer team garnered two selections on the list, Daniel Krutzen and Afonso Pinheiro.

Both Krutzen and Pinheiro were selected to the 2017 Scholar All-East Team yesterday, accompanied by teammates Carlos Clark and Nico Solabarrieta. Thursday, Krutzen was named to the Scholar All-America First Team and Pinheiro was named Second Team.

Krutzen, a midfielder from Lanaken, Belgium, earned a 3.66 GPA studying Business with a minor in Economics.  Krutzen ranked third on the team in points this season, and his play garnered him numerous awards, including America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player, All-Conference First Team, and All-East First Team.  Most recently, Krutzen was named to the All-America Third Team by the United Soccer Coaches.

Pinheiro, a forward from São Paulo, Brazil, has accumulated a 3.34 GPA with a major in Globalization Studies and a minor in Spanish.  He ranked second on the team this season with seven goals and was named All-Conference First Team, his fourth straight season earning All-Conference honors. Pinheiro, who will graduate at the end of the fall semester, was named First Team All-Conference this season and will leave UAlbany as the program’s all-time Division I leader in goals and points.

To be eligible for the Scholar All-America recognition, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.30 GPA or higher, started in more than 50% of the team’s games during the season, and be a junior or above in high academic standing. Transfers must be in their second year at their current institution. 

The 2017 Scholar All-America selections will be recognized at the All-America Luncheon on January 20, 2018 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center during the United Soccer Coaches Convention.
