UAlbany Sports Information   11-13-2017

ALBANY, N.Y. – One day after winning a second-consecutive America East title, the University at Albany men’s soccer team learned their fate for the 2017 NCAA tournament. The Great Danes will play in the first round against Big 10 opponent Maryland in College Park on Thursday, November 16.

Freshman Andreas Assiotis’ timely first career goal sent UAlbany over UMass Lowell in double overtime in the America East title game. Goalkeeper Danny Vitiello recorded his ninth shutout of the season.

This is the second-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament for the men. Last year, after winning the program’s first-ever America East title, the Danes drew the #14 overall seed and the accompanying First Round bye, before hosting Boston College in the Second Round.

UAlbany won a program single-season record 14 games in 2017, topping the 13-win season a year ago. After dropping two straight to New Hampshire and UMBC, UAlbany has rattled off a 5-0-2 record en route to its most recent conference title. In the last two years, the Great Danes have allowed one goal in five conference tournament games.

Maryland has ranked has highly as third nationally (as recently as October 20) this season after opening 2017 ranked sixth. The Terrapins have lost their last five games after opening the season 10-0-3. Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between UAlbany and Maryland.
